AI that writes your email replies

Hemmingway reads your mail, drafts each reply the way you would write it, and waits for you to send it. Here is how it works and what it will not do on its own.

Most AI email tools write an email. Hemmingway tries to write your email: the reply you would have sent if you had the time, in the way you write to that particular person.

How it works

The Hemmingway apps for Mac, Windows and Android have an Inbox. Connect your mail, and Hemmingway puts your mail and chats in one list, with what needs you first at the top.

  1. Open a message. Hemmingway reads the thread and drafts the reply.
  2. Read it. Change whatever you like, or ask for another go.
  3. Send it. Nothing goes out until you do.

It works with Gmail and Outlook, and the same Inbox holds WhatsApp, Slack and Teams, and iMessage on the Mac.

Why the drafts sound like you

Three things go into a draft besides the email itself.

  • People. You can tell Hemmingway who someone is: your boss, a client, your sister. It then writes to them the way you would, in the language you use with them, with what it should keep in mind. They never see any of it.
  • Memory. Hemmingway keeps a short list of things about you and your people. You can read every line, change it or delete it.
  • The model. Hemmingway-1 was trained for exactly this kind of writing and tested against the largest models at it. On everyday messages and emails it came first in our tests. The numbers are here.

It also gives you the email and nothing else. No "Here's a draft you could send", no three options, no note at the end explaining the tone. What you see is what goes out.

Autopilot, if you want it

Autopilot is the part that answers on its own, and it is off until you switch it on. When it is on, it follows your rules: it answers people you know when they just need an answer, and holds everything else for you to look at.

Everything it does goes into Activity, newest first, with the reason it did it. Where a thing can be undone, there is an Undo next to it. Autopilot is in the Mac and Android apps, on the paid plans.

What it will not do

  • Send in your name without asking, unless you have turned Autopilot on and the message fits your rules.
  • Train on your mail. We do not train our models on your chats, memory or People. The privacy page says exactly what is kept.
  • Decide things that cost you if they are wrong. It can sound sure and still be wrong. Money, legal and medical mail needs your eyes.

Getting started

Download the app, sign in, and connect your mail in Inbox. There is a free trial and no card is needed. If you only want to write an email now and then, the web version does that without connecting anything: paste in what you got, say what you want to say, and it writes the reply.

Common questions

Can AI write my email replies for me?

Yes. The Hemmingway apps for Mac, Windows and Android have an Inbox: open a message, and Hemmingway reads the thread and drafts the reply the way you would write it. You read it, change what you like, and send it yourself.

Does Hemmingway work with Gmail and Outlook?

Yes. Connect your mail in Inbox and Hemmingway puts it in one list with your chats, with what needs you first at the top. The same Inbox also holds WhatsApp, Slack and Teams, and iMessage on the Mac.

Will an AI email assistant send emails without asking me?

Hemmingway will not. Nothing goes out until you send it, unless you switch on Autopilot, which is off by default and only answers messages that fit your rules. Everything Autopilot does is listed in Activity with the reason, and there is an Undo where a thing can be undone.

Is it safe to let AI read my email?

We do not train our models on your chats, memory or People, and the privacy page lists exactly what is kept. The bigger risk is the model being wrong while sounding sure, so money, legal and medical mail should always go past you first.

Is there a free AI email reply tool?
